I'm setting up a brand new 30g tank and was curious about peoples favourite bottom dwellers... i'm a fan of playfull fish with character and have enjoyed having loaches in the past. Wondering what else folks would recommend as their favourite bottom dwellers?

if you want playful, then go with cories! I love mine.... 2 albinos, 4 regular size bronze, 1 behemoth bronze (her name is Bertha, lol), and 2 corydoras barbatus. I'd say the most active and 'fun' out of the lot are the bronzes, they like to do the wave across the front of the tank, all of them, all the time, lol.

Panda Cories FTW! I have a bunch in my tank at work, and they're everyone's favorites hands down!

I do like my panda cories (and my paleatus I used to have), but my favorites are definitely my clown loaches, but they obviously need a much larger tank. Kuhli loaches would be another good option for a 30

For that size tank I think skunk cories are great. Pandas are nice as well. For a larger tank, pictus would be my choice.

Kuhli loaches are awesome! IME the black ones are out much more in the light than the yellow/black banded ones.

I vote both. I have a small squad of Julis and Pandas, then a few Kuhlis hither and thither. It makes for a personable ground floor!

My two favorite bottom dwellers are dojo loaches and dragon gobys.
The dojos when kept in groups, sleep together or if you give them enough decorations they like to sleep in the decorations at funny angles.
My goby likes to dig holes where he lays, rock by rock, and put them around "his territory" but he is friendly to his occasional visitors.

My black kuhlis are out much more often than my yellow striped ones, too.
My albino cories are very busy and not shy at all.

I have a bunch of little cories (Several different types) in with a Khuli Loach I was given. The cories are a lot of fun to watch, the Loach just hangs out with the bigger, less active cories until I either turn on or off the lights... then he swims around like mad for a minute then goes back with his cory buddies :)

I also love Panda Cories most for a small tank, but for a bigger tank my favorite is a good group of YOYO loaches!
