I recntly got a festivum and it is doing great. I have noticed that it is very shy but compatiblke with my convicts and texas. how can you sex a festivum and how easy are they to breed? any other tips or advive welcomed

I am by no means a festivum expert, but I'll tel you what I have gleaned from owning two festivum for the last three years.

The only way I can tell the difference between a full grown male and female festivum is body shape and size. My male is larger, and it's head is much thicker and more blunt that the females.

As for getting them to breed, for the longest time it was trying to get them not to breed! They are easily bred (much like my angels) and make good parents.

Although I find a little aggression between my angles and festivums, it is nothing that concerns me. I am very concerned about the welfare of a festivum with more aggressive cichlids such as convicts or texas cichlids though. Good luck

I had Festivums years ago and loved them. I've been hoping to find some at the LFS to add with the Uaru, Severums and Chocolate cichlids in the 120 gallon, but no luck so far.

I also worry that you may have issues with the Convicts and Texas. I'm guessing they are not fully grown yet. The Festivum is rather mellow and may be unable to hold it's own once the other cichlids mature.

Actually festivums are really not as docile as they have been portrayed. They can be quite mean SOB's. Especially when the become full gown adults. I remember the whole sales pitch when I bought my two. Peaceful..Doscile...friendly....stay relatively small (6 to 7 inches)...........YA RIGHT!

What a load. They are tough and can be quite nasty when they want to be. Mine are HUGE! The big male is about 8.5 inches and is about 2 inches thick. He pushes everything in my tank around including a breeding pair of severums a chocolate cichlid and a 7 inch male texas. That is the nice one of the two.

The smaller one has killed other fish. It's about 7 inches and also is about two inches thick. This one has a serious chip on his shoulder.

They may not be on the same scale as some of the nasty cichlids like doviis and festaes etc... but don't think that these fish are push overs. Proceed with caution.
