My bf's job has a Betta, it's in a large vase with a Bamboo plant, no heater/filter. He works for the DEA so no cameras allowed, he says, "WorkBetta is okay i guess. still has inflamed gills or something. no idea whats wrong but its living and it eats and goes up for air."
What could be wrong with it and how should he treat it??
I'm not sure if he could bring it home so I could take a pic and try to help it and then send it back to his job...
:feedback:

I'd fishnap it, take out the bamboo, give it a proper sized small tank with a water change (a little at a time if it's been living in the vase a long while) and return it to the DEA. Those bamboo/fish vase things are just no good for bettas. It's really hard to do a water change (in fact, they try to pass the things off as self maintaining- horrible.) A temporary fishnapping is definitely in order, unless that would qualify as a federal offense for stealing from the government.

So I asked if he could bring it home and this is what he told me.
"lol ya right.. the lady here will shoot me. some crazy old lady."

Asked if it was her fish.
"no but she is senile so everything in the office is hers. paronoid about everything and just crazy"

I told him before that it's no good what he's living in, he says it's a very large vase, like that's any better.

One thing to check is that the lights are turned off overnight. One reason work fish may get sick is a lack of dark period.

why not see about you going to your bf's workplace once a week at the very least to do water changes and check up on WorkBetta? at least that way you can somewhat control the level of care and maintenance the fish and the vase receive. might even convince the crazy senile lady to upgrade to a real tank.......

Yea...not going to work. He works for the Gov't and you need level 2 clearance to get into the building & even the parking lot! Also, his job is about 50 miles away. I will ask if he will switch to a better container for the fish if I buy one. Maybe I can find a cheap small heater & filter from someone here?

"yep he swims up for food. Its on the bottom of him like a bump. its from like his gills he blows up when he is angry to little after his side fins. its like a weird white color."
