I am wanting to get some yellow labs. Now, I am not looking for any run of the mill crap quality labs. I want ones with SOLID black in their fins. I know prob most of the people on here have some labs, so lets see your specimens! Please post if you got it online or lfs, etc. I am looking to get some, but they have to be up to par. or even some suggestions on where to get the best quality labs. I have 2 at the moment that I saved from a local chain store. There was like 5 dead fish in there, and horrible quality labs. I saw 2 that has some decent black markings, one was completely clean, and the other had barring. I had to get them out of that environment. This has got me amped on labs again. But, like I said, my standards are really high...

heres one of the labs i rescued. This is the best quality lab I have ever seen around here. It has a nice black strip in the dorsal, but it doesnt go all the way to the end. It looks nice though. They are in a quarantine tank at the moment The other one is similar, but has signifigant barring...I only have my cell phone so these are the best pics I could get...

Ask RDTigger to take pics of his fry. I like to think I offer high quality labs. It took me a year to get quality labs shipped in. I have since been able to offer quality fry to discerning aficionados.

Here are two of my three, One male one female. Took a while to get these pics they were being a little camera shy. I bought them from a local breeder. Good quality Cichlids are really easy to find where I live.
Hopefully you can find some really nice ones :)

These Are my yellow labs...you will not belive where they came from...my Mom bought these from a small pet store in G.A .she had them in with black mollies and silver dollars all just a mix and she started with 2 and they were a pair and very small at first and in no time she had them to breeding size know nothing about breed them they raised 2 from a batch in the tank. she then moved them to a pond out doors coz they were fight other fish by then.So i go to visit she wants me to take them home with me.we put 2 fish in each bag and when we got home i pull the bag out and the bag is full of fry...My Husband said ohhhh my god look how many babies she has had...i told him she was a mouth holding fish so he would understand as i laughed i got a small tank ready.and now i have about 20 of these and alot of friends also have them..my mom pasted away on Dec 11th 2008 so i think that makes her fish that much more loved to me...i took pic with cell phone but will update with daughters cam soon.

Went to my LFS today(new shipment) and found a yellow lab that was a little bigger than the rest, and just amazing black markings. He did have a TINY amount of barring, but in that circumstance I am hoping it goes away when hes comfy...Got some cell pics while he is still in the bag... his black is almost full in the fins...this was an amazing find!

thanks everyone who has posted their labs. Its actually funny because I have not seen ANY nice looking labs around here. And I found a few really nice ones over the past week. Weird how things work sometimes. I have added these labs into my 40g right now and they add a very nice splash of bright yellow. I will continue to be on the lookout for great specimens. I will be thinning down my juvie stock hopefully in about a month. The 4 Dems will go to the main tank, The daktari will go to the lfs, and excess male mbamba will go as well. I say in a month or 2 tops the tank will be ready for my new batch of fry that will be up to size...Me moving juvies into the 40g is the best thing I have done. Allows them to grow out and the bigger guys could care less for the most part. Also makes the tank nice and active...

well, I went away for the weekend, and left the lights off in my tanks. Got back and the better looking of the 2 original labs wasnt anywhere to be found. To be sure, I started checking the rocks and found him under one of the first i picked up. Dont know why he died, but it sucks. Took the opportunity to rescape and do a massive water change...
Sorry about the loss, Justin!

01-25-2010, 9:03 PM
Thanks...Unfortunately I think either the 2 labs I rescued or the new one that I got from my lfs has touched off some sort of illness. The lab died like I said, but I now have a Daktari with enlarged lips and cloudy eye and another daktari with puffy whitish lips...I did a massive WC yesterday and tested my water. 0ppm ammonia, 0ppm nitrite, and 10ppm nitrate, so my params are spot on... I added some salt today, so I will have to keep an eye on whether this gets worse. If so, I may have to treat the whole tank...ugh... I should have quarantined these guys longer.
Yep, keep an eye on them. On this time of the year, fungus and bacteria are more common in the water. Good luck with that!

I have a few labs in my 244 tank, all picks as tiny $4 Juveniles last Sept. One is bigger then all the rest always gets to the meaty foods first. Tried to get them together but too difficult in the last photo. Oh and sorry for your unexpected loss Justin, always an unpleasant.

Got two new labs today. I am in the process of finding out what illness erupted in my tank tho....My gf travels this area quite a bit, and she goes to pet stores and looks for fish for me, lol. She called me yesterday saying she found a nice place with super clean tanks and labs with lots of black in the fins. I ran out there today and the guy was nice and the tanks were super clean. I saw the cleanest lab ever in his display tank. Not a flaw to it. The owner told me the labs in the tanks were his spawns. I picked up the 2. They look pretty great.

unfortunately, the stunning male lab was in his display tank. the store is half an hour away and im not sure when i will be back there yet. Next time I go, I will try to remember to take a pic for you... The juvies that I got are not stunning, but they look pretty nice. black in the top fin reaches all the way back, but its not solid.
To describe the male in the display tank, all his fins were almost solid black, BRIGHT yellow, with not even a hint of any barring thoughout his body. and he was at least 5-6 inches

I didnt realize I never mentioned that the illness bug hit, my awesome lab was involved. From the time I have gotten him, I have not witnesses him eat a pellet without spitting it up...At the time of my outbreak, this guy was hiding and just acting funny. If u look at the pics, u can see his belly was a tiny bit concaved already. I have him in my q tank with 2 others and he still doesnt eat. His belly is really concaved. I treated with salt first. No results. I treated 3 times with Jungle Labs Parasite clear. Still no eating. He looks pretty bad off. I have kind of come to the conclusion that it will die...
So, I found some seachem metro that I had and decided to dose the 10g he is in. I forgot that i had the option to dose it as I usually blend it into food... In the instructions, it says 1-2 scoops per 10g. wait 2 days and see if there is improvement. I added 2 scoops and as it was falling, he seemed to try and swallow some of it, lol. The next day, I threw some ground up nls pellets in there and watched. he got to a piece of one and ate it. I watched carefully and he never spit it out! So, today is the 2nd day and i threw in some regular pellets. I watched as he went to one and took it in his mouth. moment of truth here. No spit! I threw a couple more in and watched him eat 2 more pellets without spitting! I am now really hopeful that if he can eat, hes on the road to recovery. This guy is a trooper. Not to mention he has black finnage that rivals WC labs. He makes my current labs look like crap and they are really nice....I am gonna keep dosing metro every 2 days and hope he recovers fully. Just felt i would share.

me too efors. I am just glad I figured out what to dose to get him to eat. Now, I just hope hes not too far gone. Hes REALLY skinny. I am gonna do wc's every 2 days and keep dosing. I am hoping he gains weight pretty quick now that hes eating

As an update on the yellow lab that was on death's door before the metro, I have had him in the 10g hospital tank, and he has gained most of his size back! I fed the him 2-3 times a day once I got him eating like a cichlid again. I decided today was the day and introduce him back into the population of my 55g with labs in it. The big guy ignored him, the other male flared at him a bit, but it seems to be a passing thing. The big test for me was if after the shock of moving to a new tank, he would still eat. I fed and he did eat, like a pig, lol. So, he has gone from deaths door to back to gen pop! I'm happy I didnt lose this guy
