I'm planning my next tank :)
would like to view freshwater fish
Something colourful/reasonably hardy and not too expensive until I'm a fish expert.lol

These are three that I use to get an idea of what I am interested in. Once I find a fish I may like I google it and read even more about that fish.

Check out platys for a reasonably hardy and colorful fish. The females are just as colorful as males, so if you can get all females, you shouldn't end up being over run in fry. And they come in loads of color combination, with different spot of strip pattern.

Edit- just saw in another thread you already have platys. I use live aquaria a lot, but don't trust their information, I'll check sites for care, min tank, etc. I've seen too many variations on their site.
