Ok I have a pair of angels . This is their 2nd spawn, they ate the first ones. No biggy ( evil I know) cause if they did hatch I would have no room to raise them.

I missed both spawns so I am not sure who the female and the male are. If any one can tell from my pics I would appreciate it. Thanks!

1st pic is my Marble( the tube is thinner and longer and has a swollen belly)

2nd pic is my Koi ( tube is shorter and fatter)

3rd pic is a blurry egg shot ( they are not white like they look in the pic)

Thanks

I beleive that I read on here before that it is the male who has the shorter, fatter tube. If I'm wrong, someone will correct me. :)

That would be my Koi, which is what I thought. But they always spawn when I am not looking. anyway does anyone else know for sure??

The male is the small, trianguler looking tube. The female is the short, pinkish, fat tube. Another way of telling - many male angels develop a noticeable hump on their foreheads as they mature.

When I had mine I noticed the female stayed closer to the eggs than the male. The male did most of the protecting.

hate to say this but both of these fish look to be females to me. Are you sure the eggs were fertile? The tube in the male should be shorter and thinner.

The marble angel is a boy. ( 1st pic)
The koi is a girl ( 2nd pic)

I agree with ponderingky. Male angels do tend to have large humps on the crown ( head) area. When they spawn again, try to watch the koi angel. You will see the clearish/yellow eggs come out of her breeding tube and go onto the slate. That was a nice spawn size your pair had.

With pairs, sometimes it may take 3 spawns for them to learn that the eggs are their babies. With other pairs, they may never understand that. I would just let nature take its course, and see what the pairs does with the next spawn.

Keep up updated.

They had the eggs for breakfast! When I woke up and turned the light on this morning the 2 angels were having a feast.

the second pic is the female.

the males tube may have retracted but generally it is thinner.

the hump on the head is a no go for distinguishing male from female as often the male will not develop this hump and some females will.
the only reliable way to tell is if they lay eggs and they hatch.. you should look at the tubes(ovipositors)

They both look like female tubes to me.
