German Blue Ram Females

If they're young and not hormoned up they won't necessarily have the pink belly. The best way to sex them is to vent them, the blue spangles in the black spot is not 100% reliable (plus it's the males who tend to lack the blue sheen on the black spot, most females will have it).

:iagree:

I had a "female" who was younger and did not show the pink belly, even when in the presence of my also juvenile "male." In my case there wasn't a reliable way for me to tell (if I knew about venting I would have tried) but my best guess along with the other common signs pointed me that direction.

I've breed my long fin GBRs and they are difficult to sex when they are young, but I haven't seen a pink belly on a Ram that wasn't female regular or long fin. (I wouldn't accept it as fact since anything is possible, but surprised.) On Long fin even though they were young the males tended to grow longer fins at the same age.

DD, I have a female that when not carrying eggs will sometimes, not show a pink belly

I guess I have had these for a couple weeks, and usually, I knew dead on that if I saw a pink belly, that little sucker was a female. So when I was at the LFS picking these up, the LFS guy asked if I wanted an even mix of females and males (I got 6). I told him that would be good but that I was looking at the tank for about half an hour and I couldn't tell...

hmmm.... ok..... how big do they usually max out at...? I am assuming mine are juvies and are a little over an inch long but under 2 inches.
