So I'm setting up a new 20 Long tank and I'm trying to make it as cheap as possible so I can spend more on the filter and stocking. I don't want to pay $21 for a glass top but I need something to go over it for the light to sit on. I have eggcrate I can use for a while but most lights are not suppose to go over open water and it makes me nervous. Suggestions on a CHEAP top?

I went to Cole Hardware. They can cut pieces of glass or acrylic to a certain size.Just measure so that you leave a gap at the back for filters and such. The top for my 5.5 gal cost around 2$.

I already have a light that's 30". It's a shop light and I was worried about it being over the open water.

Do you think a local hardware store could do that kind of thing? I've never heard of a Cole Hardware.

I would think so. After all, people doing work on houses or making cabinents are going to want custom sized pieces of glass and acrylic.I would just call in, and ask about the prices per square inch. You gotta have some kind of hardware store near you.

Most hardware stores should be able to cut ya glass,i have had some cut at True Value ,Lowes,Home Depot. All my small glass tops are homemade, i had old windows laying around i had cut..

Ace Hardware is the place with the helpful hardware folks. Personal attention and service so that you can complete all of your projects.

Hey for small tanks like 1-2-3 gallon check out old picture frames for glass or hit the local Dollar store for a cheap one..Then just pay for the cuts they do,its like a couple bucks..
