Is it better to use Miracle mud or small pieces of Rock in a Refuguim?

I feel that unless the refugium is very large, something like Miracle Mud or even a DSB in the refugium is not worth messing with. There's just not enough surface area for either to really perform the way they should.
I just keep some live rock / live rock rubble in the refugium along with macroalgae.
