Hello!

I'm trying to figure out how large of a school I can have in a standard 29g planted tank, that I'm setting up eventually. The idea would be to have a large school of tetras or rasboras, then one angel, perhaps 6 or so corys and some shrimp.

What types of tetras or rasboras would allow for the maximum size school - I assume the smaller fish the more I could have? I'm not really interested in neon/cardinal tetras, but I am curious to know how many I could fit anyway.

I read somewhere a tank was set up with 5 panda cories and 30 neon tetras. Could you possibly add a angel in that mix?

The problem with Angel/Neons is that the Angel eventually gets big enough and will eat the Neons :) (or any other tiny fish.)

Danios would be big enough to stay out of the Angel's mouth, but they don't school nearly as tightly as Tetras.

Maybe you'd consider substituting a Gourami for the Angel? They're still big enough to be a "centerpiece" for that tank, but won't chase/eat the tiny fish.

Tiger Barbs also tend to school rather tightly (I wouldn't hesitate to put 12-15 of them in a 29gal)... but they'll nip at the flowing fins of an angel... they'd also do better with Gouramis.

I'm sure there are LOTS of other options/suggestions, but that's what I'm familiar with as it relates to your post.

An Angel and a large school of tiny fish would probably not work long term. If you were to get something like 5 Pandas, 12 -14 neons or similar sized schoolers, and a couple honey gouramis, or a single dwarf gourami, that could be a nice mix.

I have a 29 gal that we will being cycling in the next few weeks. Our plan is:

1 dwarf gourami
12 neon tetras
6 peppered cories
6 ghost shrimp

Just as a point of reference. :D

Of course, I failed to mention in my response above... the 29g I do have contains Goldfish and Guppies.

I think that would be a great mix. I believe that would be about max really. Personally I would cut the neons and glowlights down to schools of 12 each and add 5 kuhli loaches....but that's just because I love kuhlis

I think you should go with:
10 buenos aires tetras or 8 red eye tetras
1 bristlenose, clown, or bulldog/rubbernose pleco
1 blue/gold/opaline/platinum/lavender gourami
