OK first of all, my computer has some weird virus which wont let me type s y n o d (let alone s y n o dontis) without crashing! So if you reply to this post, please don't type the word in full or I won't be able to read it!

Are these fish solitary, or do they like a friend or friends - I was trying to find out when I discovered my small computer allergy to the word s y n o d. I love catfish and loaches, and I wondered if I could get some. I'd have to get S. petricola, as my tank is only 4ft. Also, as even these can grow to 4in, do they like snacking on other fish?

I have a group of 4 syno petricola in my 55 gallon. I kind of wish I had a few more. They are fun little fish and always seem to be busy. Mine hide in the rocks a lot unless the lights are out or there is food being fed. They love to eat!
Petricola like to be in groups, the more the better. They take a while to get to be full size. Mine are almost a year old and are only 2.5 inches long.
Petricola do like to snack on small fish. Since I got mine a year ago I have not had a single fry in the tank survive. Which is part of the reason I got them. My mbuna breed like rabbits. Luckily petricola have pretty small mouths and would really only get baby fish.

I have S. nigriventris, which are similar to the petricola (smaller size, like to be in groups, big-time snackers)....

Depending on your tank size you could also go for one of the larger species (S. nigrita aka "Lace", S. eupterus aka "Feather fin")....I *think* the larger ones are best done solitary...
