I'm considering doing a South American cichilid tank with a mated chanchito pair and a large school of Buenos Aires tetras...has anyone had any experience with these cichlids? What water parameters seem to work best? Food types? Thanks!

I had these fish until very recently. They are gorgeous fish. They actually came from toddnbecka, who I am assuming you are looking at getting a pair from, too. I would do it. I had mine in a 29. I loved these fish. They were very healthy, and great quality fish. They have a very nice temperament.

Depends which species of chanchito you're talking about, it's a common name applied to a number of cichlid species. I have a couple dozen juvie (~2") Australoheros oblongum growing out in a 75, and it looks like a pair has formed. They're the smallest of the group, males max out between 4-5". females 3". Very mellow fish, mix well with anything too large to eat that won't beat the snot out of them. Juvies would be fine with BA tetras, but a full-grown male would probably eat them.
If you want some shipped shoot me a PM.

Todd is correct in everything he said. His fish are great and close relatives to my pair.

They are very pretty fish and easy to breed once a pair forms. I keep mine with Keyholes and they are gentle towards them. They are getting a little grumpier in their old age though.

Make about 5"

Red Ceibal are the other option. They are more common and more aggressive.

I have 4 wild Austroloheros sp Local I caught in Uruguay I will sell, they are great fish, extremely hardy and cold tolerant, they do fine in pH from 6-8,no heater needed and will eat just about anything and are fairly easy to breed. Ken
