I feel so dirty! I went salty. :/
I'm having so much fun exploring every aspect of the aquarium hobby, I almost forgot to check on my freshwater tank. It's doing okay, but I went from 4 to 1 Cory in the weirdest ways.
1) A Cory got slammed into the wall by my Angel on accident and died.
2) A Cory got slammed into a Java Fern and broke his back. He got froze to have a slow, humane death. And then put in the garbage disposal so he didn't wake up.
3) No one knows... He disappeared, look for about an hour, turning over rocks and everything, checked around the aquarium too, he's no where to be found.
And the last one just got a super hicky by the pump in there. He'll most likely survive, at least I hope he will.
Just wanted to post here and let everyone know (if you missed me) that I'm alive!, just a little salty. :)

Can I say hell?
Hellz nah! I love reefing. I caught the bug. :)
But hellz yah! I love the look of a good freshwater planted, or anything freshwater really. I like both, in different ways.

Maybe, haven't had a whole lotta luck with them in the past though.

Phew, at least you're not completely evil!
FindingBlemo
01-31-2010, 5:48 PM
Just 26.6% of me is evil.
Do the math, I have 30 gallons of freshwater, and 8 gallons of saltwater. 8/30 = .26666, that means I'm 26% on the dark side!
Michwol42795

More like 27%...one percent too much!

I've not had any problems with corys yet. More than likely you'll be fine. Nice tanks Blemo! Well not the SW one...too evil for my tastes.

not really sure why you find the need to apologize for going reef. I went reef too a few months ago and its the best.

Oh heck no! I'm not apologizing for going to the salty side, I'm proud of it! It takes a true hobbyist to make the switch, and to keep going through attacks of hair algae and everything in between, I'm really proud of myself. It was my 1 year salty anniversary on 12.28.09.
Specs:
1 Black Misbar Clownfish
~8lbs of LR
~10lbs of LS
AOG Zoanthid Frag as first coral, waiting for it to colonize so I can frag out.
That's pretty much it, if you want my CUC specs:
2 Astrea Snails
Soon to be ~20 Dwarf Ceriths. Some USPS problems ending up in him having to re-ship, so they'll get here probably on Wednesday.
Thanks Dylan! :nutkick:

Your welcome......You gonna try doing other corals??
FindingBlemo

I'm gonna try. I'm gonna use this tank to collect Zoanthids. It's like a hobby within a hobby. It's awesome! Here's my list, you can Google 'em if you want:
Fruit Loop Zoa
Blue Armor of God Zoa
Joker Zoa
Fire and Ice Zoa
Spartan's Pride Zoa
Eagle Eye Zoa
(In no particular order)
If I can conquer this list, I'll be so dang happy! Hahaha.
Totaled up, that will be about $200-300

Oh man! It's so much fun, but it's a lot more work also. I spent a year just trying to regulate my tank, because I made some bad decisions and didn't research before I bought. I ended up having to take fish back, dealt with a huge outbreak of cyano, and just finished dealing with a ginormous outbreak of green hair algae. But now that's all over, I can start having fun!

I might try it out in the future. Probably not for awhile though, but you recommend it?
FindingBlemo
02-01-2010, 5:58 PM
Oh yes! It's a whole new adventure. It's almost nothing like freshwater aquariums besides the fact that it's a glass container and fish. Parameters, bioloads, filtration methods, everything is different. It's really fun, it's like relearning everything you already know! So keeping both freshwater and saltwater aquariums in my bedroom adds a whole new part to my life. It's a great experience, I've learned so much keeping aquariums then I ever could have without them. Not just about fish though, about life. To keep trying, never give up, earn a lot, it's like caring for 20+ little kids in my bedroom. It's really a great thing. Of course I recommend it!

Well if I ever get the chance I'll do it! How much more did the SW cost than the FW.

its ten times as fun as fresh. Its also just as easy to maintain a reef tank as a freshwater tank, contrary to what many think. I'll even go a step further and say high tech planted tanks are more of a pain in the *** to keep up with than reefs.
Reefs just cost more money up front.

depends on what you want to do. You can get used equipment for a reasonable price. They real expenses are lighting (which is much more powerful generally on reefs) and corals.
I prefer to have the good stuff on my small reef... vortech mp20 pump, skimmer, metal halide lighting... bla blah blah.

Idk if I'd go right out and say ten times as fun. I mean freshwater aquariums are really fun, and when you're starting out, extremely exciting. But that's it. You hit a point where you can still advance further, but you just don't want to. I'd say ten times more opportunities and paths you can go down in saltwater, but not necessarily ten times more "fun."
And I totally agree with you on the fact that it's just as easy to maintain a reef tank as a freshwater tank except if you run into problems like I did, with not researching enough and making some bad turns, resulting in a green hair algae, dare I say, conflagration! But, now that that's all behind me, I can enjoy the more fun aspects of keeping a reef aquarium, and not just trying to rid my tank of algae.

Thanks for the info guys! The good thing is I already have a 150 watt metal halide lamp I could use on a reef tank. I'm not going to be starting one now, but hopefully within the next couple years I'll have the money and time.
