I ordered a pair of 24" glass versa-tops for my 55 gallon to put under my custom hood. My problem is the glass covers are a fraction of an inch too long for the 55 because of the brace in the middle.

Has anyone had this problem, and how can I make them fit?

Contact a local glass shop and see if they will cut them down for you. You can score and snap glass yourself, but it takes some practice to get good at it--they will have that experience! Usually costa about $1 per cut.

Then, use sharp scissors to cut the plastic strap down the middle.

There are two types of AGA glass tops for a 55 gallon:

If you bought it locally maybe you can return it for the other model?

I bought it from foster&smith..I cannot use the one piece top due to the brace and especially due to the hood I'll be using..Why the heck would they sell a cover that doesnt fit? Arent all tanks witht he center brace desiged to the same specs?

Nope--most of the companies vary the tank specs by a little bit. Ihave to AGA tanks, bought about 2 months apart, and they are not exactly the same, just very close. Silly, inconvenient and annoying.
