So I set up a 20gallon planted tank about 2 weeks ago. I just got my 50 watt light kit today in the mail. So I can finally add plants!!!! My PH is 7.8, my nitrite and ammonia are both 0. Well anyways, here are pictures of my 20gallon, and my brand new 45 gallon tank. I just put water in my 45 today. I am just going to go with artificial with the bigger tank because Its too expensive to get another light and co2. Let me know what you guys think. Both tanks need plants, which I will get when my taxes go through.

Looks like you're off to a great start! And don't give up on plants for the 45. Some plants (anubias or certain crypts for example) do fine with low light. As for CO2, the only thing I do is add Flourish Excel twice a week.

Nice tanks...can't wait to see them planted!

Michaels has some nice fake plants that look real good in aquariums. I'm using some now in a 125 that I can't afford to light up. Just pile some stones around them and bend the bottom part so it curves under the stones.

Also, I would put the branchier driftwood in the smaller tank and get rid of the log. I think that branchier stuff has more potential.

Keep us posted!

well what I planned on doing was really drapping alot of moss and ferns on that log. I hope to not see it. I just need it for surface area.

Defiantly a good start. Keep us posted

Updated Pictures.

So I went to Captain Bob's residence last night to possibly get some plants. This man hooked me up!!! Hes a great hobbyist and enjoys what he does. http://www.captainbobsfishtales.com/ . He gave me my first plants ever! I am now broken into the live plant hobby. Here are some photos of my 2 new neon tetras and all my new plants. Enjoy!!!

Looks great!!
Like Pearl said, don't give up on live plants for your 40. I have plants in all my tanks and only 2 of the 6 have nice special lights. The rest have regular strip lights. Crypts and java ferns, anubias all do well in really low light situations. If you watch the classified section here, esp when spring gets here...you can really great plants from the hobbyists here for cheap!! I have always been really impressed by what I received!!
