Hi,

I am about five weeks new in the fresh water fish world and am loving it.

Currently I have 4 zebra danios and 4 dwarf neon rainbows in the 55-gallon. I believe that they are evenly sexed.

When the dwarfs were introduced into the tank about a week ago, one of the danios fin-nipped a male dwarf upon meeting; the danios had the whole tank to themselves for the previous 4-weeks. I chased the danio gently with my finger through the glass each of the two times this occured. They all seem to get along real well since that first meeting, and they even school together sometimes.

Separately, I have a 10-gallon tank that has one lone Australian rainbow and one zebra danio. Initially that danio was in the bigger tank but I noticed it getting smaller and paler as the week went on so I moved her to the 10. Over the last four weeks that danio is gaining color and size slightly, but she is still smaller than the other four in the bigger tank.

The Australian tolerates the danio pretty well, but won't interact with the danio except to exert a little authority by swimming fast and close, which makes the danio move. The danio seems to want to be close to the rainbow though (big sister or brother seems like).

Anywho, I would like to move these two lone fishies into the 55-gallon soon and would like to know if this would best be done with another Australian rainbow and zebra? That way two new couples would be introduced?

Secondly, with the other fish in my 55 tank being smaller than the Australian, is that a good mix so far? I am worried that with the size and speed of the Australians they will come to dominate the tank where the smaller fish are having so much fun currently. I've cross referenced several sites on compatibility but could not find any comments on the trio.

Thanks for any comments.

there are some nice people here who will help answer your questions!
i think your danio wants to me near the rainbow because they are schooling fish and the danios do best in groups.

Welcome! I would increase all your fish numbers to at least 5, when adding from the 10 to the 55 you can just add the ones you have now but I would still add at least 4 more Australian, and 1 more Dwarf Rainbowfish.

Marevelous. and thanks...:) Do you think I need to follow the rule of adding 3 to 4 inches of fish at a time in a newer set up to ensure water qualityh? Or are my additions small enough in that size tank that it could become fully stocked pretty quickly. Even though I read that it is okay to plan on 1 inch of fish per gallon, another article that attracted me recommended 80% of that number, which would affort me about 44 inches of fish in a 55 gallon tank.

So nice to meet you and thanks for you insight and for helping me to feel at home with my newly sprouted fins...:)

Thanks...:)...I see your point. Her spine is slightly curved so I thought selecting another smaller, weaker looking danio may help for the bigger tank and bigger daniko tank mates. Yikes. What do you think?

Some have said she may be an older danio. I will watch any intro of new family members to do my best in ensuring a peaceful community tank. This is my goal and one of my strong desires.

I normally only add one or two fish at a time so that the biofilter can keep up with the bioload. I wouldn't follow the inch rules because there's too many variables to be very accurate. Not all fish inches are created equal, lol. I think you would still have some room with 5 Australian Rainbows, 5 Dwarf Rainbows, and 5 Zebras. You could add a centerpiece fish like a Betta or Dwarf Gourami. Also, you could add a school of bottom feeders, maybe corys or dwarf loaches. :)

Thank you!!!

The vision you painted in my heart-tank is beautiful. A centerpiece fish, too? And, it's okay to have an odd number of one species?

I have noticed that the dwarf neon rainbows will school together with a wanna be danio tagging along from time to time...so cute...making a school of five. Many other times they will hang out in a group of three among themselves, which leaves an odd man or women out. Very interesting in light of the numbers you presented.

Will post progress and pics. Please keep in touch. Tanks...:)

:), yup you can have a centerpiece fish too. Odd numbers should be fine for those species, but you have room to add another to each and make the numbers even if you want. Interesting behavior with your fish, Danios are very active and social fish so that's probably why he likes to tag along with the Rainbows. Can't wait to see pics!
