View Full Version : Dog/Cat Owners... Stay away from this otc flea/tick med!!!
I just bought some flea and tick squeeze on for dogs by a brand called Sergeant's... and luckily read up on it online before using it! Apparently something like half of the cats using Sergeant's brand flea and tick control react to it, and I see a lot of reports of animals having seizures and even deaths associated with this toxic product. Of course I will be returning it in the morning. I purchased it from a grocery store, and they also apparently sell it at WalMart. So beware this product! It makes me mad that this is on shelves...

I only have dogs now, but I've never had any luck with store bought flea meds. The stuff from the vet always works better IMO. Glad you didn't use this on you cat though!

Almost all flea and tick products are deadly chemical pesticides Liz. It makes me shudder that people apply them routinely on the inside and outside of pets. I know it's a necessary evil when your pet is exposed to these pests. I've been lucky and I've never had to use any of these products. For years I raised and sold puppies and heard from several of my buyers that their beloved pets had horrible and deadly reactions to routine flea dips. There's not much for a natural alternative. I think lots of garlic in the diet helps keep them away. My advice is don't use any of those products just to "head off" fleas and ticks if you don't have them. The cancer rate in dogs and cats is immensely high and it's no wonder.

I find it's best to get flea meds from your vet.
At all the dog daycares in my area year round flea medications are required. So I have to use something on my dogs :(

Long ago, I used Bio-Spot and that seemed to work well.
I really feel upset about pet products. I don't think there's any significant liability for product companies because "pets" have no substantial monetary value (yet I wouldn't sell my dog for a billion dollars).
Not all that many years ago, "Hartz Blockade" killed quite a few dogs and cats :(
I agree, a product from the vet is usually best and by far, most vets sincerely care about the welfare of your animals.

As a former vet tech I saw a bunch of cat's come into the practice seizing and with other issues from owners using the dog OTC flea meds on their cat. If you are not going to get your flea meds from your vet, at the VERY LEAST follow the directions on the package. The topicals from the vet are much safer and work better anyway.
