Well, my tank is cycled - hooray! It took 32 days start to finish.
Ammonia is at 0, nitrites are at 0. I put enough ammonia in last night to register 3-5 ppm, and this morning it's at zero again.
So I'll do a big water change tomorrow and get the fish on Saturday. What perfect timing.
A big thanks to all of you who have helped this complete newbie through this. Now I'll be back in here asking more questions about the fish!

Congrats on the births(?) of several hundred million bouncing baby bacteria. :D

Ha! Whatever works to keep the fish happy. My kids are thrilled. They're just small, ages 9 and 6, so this is a big adventure for them.
They've been wanting an aquarium for a couple of years now, but I haven't had the time or money before now to do this.
Actually, I think I'm probably more excited than they are. Now I'll be nervous getting the fish, and hoping they stay alive. But with the help of everyone here, I'm sure it'll be just fine.
DEmigh, that avatar is just freaky, you know.

Your patience to this point bodes well for the health and happiness of any fish who are lucky enough to come live at your house. :)
Your children have learned many important lessons from the process :) :)
<does double take at last line of your post>
What's so strange about eating cute little fish? Doesn't everybody do that?
<blank, bewildered stare>

Nah, we don't eat the cute little fish, just the big, ugly ones that we catch at the lake. They do taste good, though. We catch and release the huge ones. My 9 year old caught such a big one that we couldn't get it into the boat, as we only had a small net. I didn't have a camera, either. My poor husband felt so bad for him, but now he has a fish story to tell about the one that got away. Everyone out at the cottages knew the story right away, too.
We catch northern pike, walleye and perch in our lake and the pike can get pretty big, trophy-sized in some cases.

DEmigh, do you have any pictures of your marine tank? It sounds gorgeous with all of those fish in there. My kids would go absolutely nuts over something like that.
It sounds like a real-life Finding Nemo show with the tang fish and others.

I am honored by your request :) Edit: and the fish thank you too!
I am in the process of a major re-model on the tank right now, so it's not really very photogenic :(
There are many truly beautiful pics of the aquariums of other members in various threads on this fine forum. I use them for inspiration :D

Yes, I've been looking at some of the tanks members have here. Very impressive. I've always wanted an aquarium since I was a kid, and now I can have my own.
One of the aquarium shops here has a marine set up with some blue and yellow tangs, and a clownfish. It's so beautiful.
I think I could really get into this hobby if I have success with my little 10 gallon. Only problem is that I have very limited space in my house. But, hey, everyone has to start somewhere, don't they?
