How many coats of poly would you put on a stand? I am on my 4th coat and debating if I should do anymore.

Do 20 coats if you want but...methinks UR done...

I usually do 2 or 3, but I usally use outdoor or marine poly which tends to be heavier. I could see doing 4 coats on new wood if it's thirsty. Tho it looks dry it'll take a few weeks to really 'cure' and it will look great. I'd wait at least a day after the last coat b4 using the stand.

I just spent 2 days fussing over poly'ing my own tank stand. As my wife said "it's ONLY a tank stand" The fish are the attraction.

Agreed, I to only use marine mineral spirit exterior grade Poly as I just dont like doing it again once it gets wet a few times (lesson learned). having said that I have only had to use 2 or 3 coats dependent on looks. If your applying it manually this is easy to tell and feel, but if your using a sprayer and don't know how to use it properly it can come out dull now matter how many coats you apply.

Yup doing it all by hand..Everything about this stand was built by me. Heres some pics with the 3rd coat of poly..Also I haven't built my doors yet but am going to starting this upcoming week :)

Not so bad for a 21 year old's first stand that he ever built, I think lol

Not bad at all, looks very nice.

Are you going to make rail and stile panel doors with a fake center jamb or just go with flat doors with a fake center jamb?

Excellent work at any age!

As a side, Gunner, I like to use precatalyzed lacquer as my finish. Must be sprayed, but can't miss with the look or the non-penetratable surface. And it dries in minutes.

Ditto great job!

Looks WAY better than the used 6' stand I just sanded and refinished with Mahogany polyshades. REALLY hard to get an even finish with polyshades (tinted poly) with all the nooks & crannies. The doors..relatively flat...came out great.
Next time I sand it all the way down, stain and use a good marine or at least outdoor poly.

Great looking!

Do you need to put anything else on after poly? Did 4 coats and I think that will be good enough for poly, plus it looks good.
