Maybe in a larger tank. Discus really should be in nothing less than a 55 gallon, with a 75 gallon being a much better choice. Adult discus are huge. I am not sure how the betta would feel about the higher temperatures but I have heard this mix can work out.

The mix is fine. They appear to share the same requirements. Your only issue is tank size. 29g is too small for a group of discus. Take note you don't buy discus less than 4 in number unless this is a breeding pair and a breeding pair is not what you are looking forward to combine a betta with.

In case you are thinking angelfish would work out better, angels are aggressive in pairs too and an angelfish would probably nip a betta.

If I were doing a betta community, I would do Endler's guppies - they have great colors and their fry is easy to unload (unlike regular pet store guppies). Totally different from discus I know, but I think you need small fish in a betta friendly community. Big fish tend to eat little fish.

good advice, thanks to all of you
and to think i got rid of a 85gal breeder tank
oh well i guess i will look for a 300gal and put a few Discus in my 110 and put the Oscars in the 300
now if i can only sell this idea to my wife

I am not sure how the betta would feel about the higher temperatures but I have heard this mix can work out.

Bettas thrive in temperatures around 78-80 degrees Fahrenheit. In fact, it is the recommended temperature for them. They are tropical fish. I think a Betta would be fine at 84 degrees (ideal temperature for a discus). But I would keep the temperature around 82 degrees just to be safe.
