Our 16 year old Aussie Shepherd mix had to be put to sleep today... and we are both having difficulties keeping our faces dry tonight :cry:

She was getting old, and for the past few weeks Maverick had uncontrollable anxiety (obvious signs of having pain) and panted all of the time. She's had tumors on the outside of her body for a few years, and the vet basically said it could spread internally... I suspect this was happening, or had happened and that explains her issues.

Anyways, I dont know if she knew or what.. but the past day she went back to perfectly normal!! Of course, once we arrived at the vet today, she started walking in circles, panting, barking, and shaking.

It was very hard for me... Ive known Maverick for 12 years (shes my better half's dog). She used to do goofy things such as run through piles of leaves and with her snout- throw leaves in the air, and let them rain down on herself, shaking them off, and repeating. It was hilarious. She also loved snow. If it was snowing out, she would stay out no matter how cold and get coated with snow. The only thing you'd be able to see was her eyes!! she was tri-colored, so to cover her in snow and not see her coat was quite an accomplishment on her part, trust me...lol

I just needed to vent... I came onto the web and started reading stupid dog poems and now Im sobbing again. Our other today - a 1 1/2 year old black lab, is lost... maverick was his companion, his partner in crime. Its just so sad ...

Any advice or tips on how to stop crying are appreciated...lol

So sorry for your loss. Sounds like you have so many fond memories. Focus on these and the good life you provided her - and she provided to you.

you poor thing, Chriz. I am so sorry for you but know that the lifetime of memories and love you gave her are immeasurable. Most importantly is that she went with a heart full of love for you.

Here is one of my favorite pics of her from 2008... out on the boat. Note her paws crossed - She was always so 'proper'....lol

I'm very sorry for your loss. :(

So sorry for your loss. It's always such a difficult thing to go through, even though you know it's coming. Just weigh the pain you feel now against all of the joy you got out of your lives together, and I bet you'll see you still got an amazing deal. Sometimes it helps just to let it all out. Feel better, and my condolences to you and yours.

Awww, Maverick was such a beautiful dog. :( I don't know what to say to make the pain go away; I think only time can do that. The fact that you had her in your life for the past 12 years (over a decade) of time is something that I think is truly special -- a lot of people nowadays cannot even stay married for that long. Just know deep within that Maverick is probably looking back and thanking both you and your other half for the priceless years you all have been blessed to have spent with each other as she crosses the Rainbow Bridge. The pain has ended and several chapters of life have reached the point of close. My heart goes out to both of you and the lab. :(

I'm so sorry. Loosing a dog is loosing a family member. When we've gone through it, it's helped some to know that others understand. I still think of my best friend / dog, Winston, that we lost nearly a year and a half ago every day and miss him every day. It does get easier, though. If I had three wishes, one would be that our dogs could live as long as we do.
