I am looking for a midground plant to give some ground cover for my catfish and sparkling gourami. Right now the gourami hide under anubius leaves but I only have a couple of them and they are planted on the cave structures. I want a plant or two that I can put between my caves so the fish have cover when going from cave to cave. Looking for something that will grow well with my lighting but wont get huge and overtake the tank like my last sword did. Plus I want it to fill out the barren space feel my tank has right now. Picture in my profile is the tank but it has been rescaped since then, the caves are different and the sword is gone as well as the ludwigia Ovalis (didn't grow well in my lighting) in the back.

Tropica swords are smaller..

You thinking of echinodorus parviflorus v. "Tropica"? I've grown these in two aquariums. Very beautiful sword that is easy to grow and stays small (maybe 5-6 inches diameter tops).

I'd prefer a small sword over a crypt. I just think they look nicer... not that I don't also grow crypts. :)

If you want narrower leaves than Wendtii, either Crypt balansae or Sagitaria subulata should do fine. Dwarf sag will get 4-6 inches, sag that isn't dwarf will get close to a foot. But with low light like you have, they likely won't even get that tall.

I'm not sure you have enough light to keep swords happy. Maybe, maybe not.

If you want stem plants, moneywort (bacopa monieri), water sprite or water wisteria would all probably do ok. They won't grow fast, but should grow.
