I have just sent away for one of these spin down filters - lets see how it works.
http://www.rusco.com/html/whybetter.html

Seems like the best of all worlds - filter anywhere from 30 mesh/500 microns down to 1000mesh/15 microns. Clear clogged filter screen by opening one ball valve. Insert finer filter screen on the fly to polish tank - then replace with coarser screen for 24/7 mechanical filtration!

Then run the output through a fluidized bed sand filter to oxidize ammonia and nitrites at incredibly efficient rate.
I just put one in and it is a thing of beauty!!

Low initial cost ($150 - $60 filter, $60 fluidized bed, $30 powerhead) or double that for a fully redundant setup!!
Low (or NO) maintenance
one single UPS to keep it all going

Done!!
What am I missing? Large commercial operations, aquariums etc use this kind of stuff - why not home hobbyists.
I can see the industry has no interest in this solution - there's no money in it!!
But tight wads like me - OHHHH BABY!!!!:headbang2:

Great! Please post the whole "objective" install, run and results. You never know it could be the start of something new.

Elegant in its simplicity ( I hope its ok to post stuff I found somewhere else - I am not hiding the source)
