OK, so i hear fish cant see red lighting. What kind of red light could I put on a 55 gallon tank that would light it sufficeint to see the fish, but not light up the room. I dont recall seeing a red flourescent n e where, maybe incadescent bulbs? paint a peice of plastic red? any idea?

im assuming you mean at nighttime?
for this i would use the Reef Lamp Plus (with moonlight and nightvision) (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2372724685&category=46314)
it's a pretty neat thing to have.

You can find 13 watt red PC lamps at Aquarium Hobbyist. (http://www.ahsupply.com). NOt sure what intensity to use. I did a little pubmed search and found that many fish don't seem to have a spectral peak beyond ~570 nm, but I don't knowhow broad the tuning curves are.

Thanks for the links, I actually found some LEDs taht are about 1/2 the strength of the ones listed with that kit on ebay, bought em.. $1.99 each... and a watch battery 3V. Modified one of my plastic flip up parts of the hood to submerge the bulb only in the tank... does wonders... with only 3 bulbs on the 55, tank looks awesome. I ordered some off the net taht are stronger.. thanks for the help~!

Look for the 4000+MCD bulbs
I first suspended the bulbs over the water, gave it a spotlight look on the bottom, then if u dip the bulb or submerge it, the wter seperates the light to a nice glow, pretty awesome :)
