I just tested my water, after adding three new fish three days ago and my Amonia has spiked to about 1.0 ppm. Is this unusual and what should I do to combat it? Also, should i be using biospira for my tank. What exactly does it do and what are the pros and cons? My nitrite is 0ppm by the way.

Was the aquarium established before the addition of the 3 fish or is this a brand new set-up? Either way, do water changes to get the ammonia down, until your "good" bacteria catches up.

I have no experience with biospira, but from what I have read here, it's good stuff and works, so yes, add it.

Bio-Spira is supposed to eliminate the spikes seen in the common cycle process. It is very good, but best if used before adding fish for maximum affects.

I (too) wonder if your tank is already cycled or not. How new is this tank? What fish did you add, and what size is the tank?

I added two Harlequins after about a week and a julli cory. Then I added another Harlequin and 2 albino cories after another week. Now my ammonia is at .5ppm and my nitrites are at 0ppm. I will be adding biospira tommarow I believe

So you didnt cycle your tank then? Sounds like you just slowly added fish....but none the less, the ammonia and nitrite spikes will be there. Not sure if your adding the bio spira in time but give it a shot.

make sure to do plenty of water changes...;)
