i really want an eel to add to the effect of my tang community. i realize this will be a threat to the multies in there, so i plan to remove them in that case. a plagistoma or a elipsifer isnt quite in my price range, but i still want some kind of mastecemebelus species. i was looking online and the zigzag (i think) as well as the zebrinus seem to stay at a relatively small size as compared to things like the fire eel. what do yal think? would they pose any threat to my cyprichromis?

Whats the entire stock and tank size again? the 55 in your profile?

I don't think a full grown cyp (are they jumbo or non jumbo?) would be a potential meal for an eel the size you are looking for and they should stay pretty much out of each other's way.

Asian spiney eels are soft water fish; I don't know how well they'd adapt to the water chemistry.
most commercial breed ones should be fine though. the water chemistry is about the same for miles around so my lfs's water should be similar to mine and they do fine there.

Don't cheap out. Buy the elipsifer. I had a peacock eel for 5 years and have had elipsifers for 3-4. You can get elipsifers all day for $30 as opposed to another type such as zig zag, etc for probably $10-15. I have had tropheus, calvus, cyps, kilesa, multies, brevis, all the gobies, and leleupi. I would trade any of those fish for an elipsifer. The activity and colors are truly amazing. It will easily be the best freshwater purchase you ever make.

dont the elipsifers get freakin huge? i want one, and $30 isnt too bad. but i just dont want one getting too big.

where can i find one for $30 like what roger said?

Try Aquabid maybe contact some of the frequent Tang sellers like Little Africa Aquatics talk to Greg he's usually able to get rare and hard to find stuff but he isn't cheap..
