I'm new to this, and have found this forum to be full of great information. My wife got me a 29G aquarium for my birthday and I am currently cycling it with 6 tiger barbs. I've been following the advice of the book she got me, the Simple Guide to Freshwater Aquariums by David Boruchowitz. I wish I had read about fishless cycling here first, but oh well.

Looking at some of his stocking schemes, I had pretty much decided that I was going to either go with an all barb scheme (12 to 15) along with some cory cats, or another scheme he had, which consisted of 6 tiget barbs and a pair of convicts.

Do these seem like a good idea, or are there any other suggestions for a scheme that goes well with Tiger barbs? I'd like to have a bit of variety in the tank, which is why I'm thinking of something different than the all barb plan. My daughter is just fascinated by the fish (she's 4), so I want to keep her interested, as well.

Pictures I have seen of apistos and rams are amazing, but I'm afriad they might be too difficult for a first timer.

Thanks in advance for all of your help!

The stocking schemes sound good, although if you get a pair a convicts, that are the opposite sex, you'll be overrun with fry in no time.

If you like the rams, you can try bolivian rams. They are a different specie and aren't quite as pretty but they are much hardier. You might also want to try a pair of kribensis also, as they are hardy as well. You could try a paradise fish for non-cichlid specie, you could try Mollies or platies.

As far as apistos, a good beginner fish is Apistogramma cacatuoides (Cockatoo cichlid).

Thanks for the help. If I go away from the all bard scheme, I'll probably give Bolivian Rams, the apisto (Cuckatoo as recommeded) or possibly the Blue Eyed Cichlid (instead of the Convict) a shot, depending on what my lfs has.

This is a great site, wish I had read about fishless cycling earlier  Easier on the fish, and less time to be up and running!
