OK.... My fishroom is almost ready for me to begin building tank racks.

I've been thinking about freestanding vs. "built ins".... I can see where if I want to rearrange tanks down the road that freestanders would be easier, but I think I've thought out the placement of roughly 60 tanks fairly well, and I think that built ins may be more solid.

By "built ins", I mean permanently attaching the back of each rack to the walls by using 5" lag bolts to attach the horizontal 2x4 portion of the rack at each level to the wall. The front of the rack will obviously be free standing and tied to the back horizontals with 2x4's forming a 2x4 frame under each tank.

Questions, comments or ideas ????

Have you followed Rach's stand builds..I would keep them in sections like hers....you could always strap them to the studs, but the wider deeper base with steps should prevent that necessity.

These rack will be the same depth front to back from top to bottom. Any links to Rach's stand build ?

We decided to do 4' sections. The tanks will abut completely with the way they are designed to help hold in heat and maximize space. This just made it easier for our construction (rather than having to weld in the basement we could make them outside and still get them into the basement). They are stepped so that I could use less space between levels and still have adequate room to work inside the tanks.
Here are 2 of the 4 so far installed:

This particular rack houses 75g on the bottom, 55's on the middle, and 20 longs on top. I have other racks which hold multiple 15s and 10s. There are racks for the 30s and 29s in the works as well as two more identical to those pictured.
