I'm looking into buying a tank off of craigslist that was once a reef tank that had a light for growing corals.

Can reef lighting that has compact florescent bulbs be used for freshwater planted tanks? Could I just replace the bulbs for ones with less wattage?

Thanks so much!

yes. no.

you wont be able to run bulbs with less watts but you should be able to get away with running less bulbs. know what kind of fixture it is?

Unfortunately I don't know. This is all I know about it.

"two 96 watt 50/50 compact fluorescent lights, if you are interested in the using this tank for a reef type set up.

The lights are used for reef tanks in growing corals. They are connected with a quad fitting. It is possible that they can be used with different bulbs but I wouldn't say for certain."

50/50 bulbs would prob be best. how large is the tank?

Its a 40 gallon breeder.

So would it work or not? If so, do I remove a bulb?

what kind of plants do you want to grow? once you get the fixture you could unplug the bulb and see if it will still run with out it. some will some will not. 1 96w bulb over a 40 gallon can be a lot of light. the 50/50 bulb will let you grow low light and some medium light plants on its own.

I was actually planning on growing low/ medium light plants. :)

A 96W is a square pin CF most likely. I have 36" coralife fixtures with those lamps. I use 6700K for plants but I'm not sure you can find that color temp any more. I'd check Big Al's and Drs Foster and Smith.
