Hi everyone new to the site. I have 55g tank I just started recently and starting to put some plants in it. Lol to be honest I forget at the moment what I have in there other then a few anacharis some aponogeton bulbs another readily available plant that I cant think of right now. I just learned that I also have some non-aquatic plants that I need to ditch. I bought a bulb at petsmart that claimed to be excellent for freshwater/planted aquariums, it is a 40w 18,000k bulb. Since most of what I have read says I should have somewhere between 5,000-12,000k. I also have the light on timer for 12 hrs. Is this ok or do I need a different light?

personally if you could i would take it back. i just get the daylight bulbs at home deopt/lowes which are cheaper look better and seem to grow better then the rest. i would also think depending on what you want to grow about just upgrading to a dual t8 fixture from lowes home depot. if you really want to get into plants and give your self a lot of options you could get a nice t5 ho fixutre from fishneedit.com

Light is a little low for the plants you have, but they should stay alive. They might not grow a lot but should stay alive. You might want to consider upgrading your light to a twin bulb 52 watt bulb setup. This will give you almost 2 wpg (watts per gallon). The plants you have chosen are good starter plants, but they do like a moderate light.
Take lots of pictures it's a lot of fun to see how things grow.
