Hi all

I know some of you guys have read some of my other posts and now I have a new idea.....Electric yellow labs!! I have kept one before but I was not all into cichlids like I am now....will they work with my african knives, and senegal bichir in my 55 gallon. Im adding my striped raphael catfish when it gets bigger along with my 2 banded leporinus when they get bigger too. I will upgrade to a bigger tank when I move out to my own place (55 is as high as i can go right now mom says lol) so will this setup work?

My current tank is a 55 gal standard..I will definitely upgrade in the future.. all my fish so far are seven inches and smaller..even my banded leps are under 2 inches so they have a lot of growing to do..

Electric Yellow Labs are a Malawi Mbuna type of fish. They will sometimes get along with other peaceful Malawi Mbuna and rarely anything else.

The mix you suggest probably wouldn't work out in the long run. You'd be better off stocking the 55 with Mbuna if you like the Electric Yellows, that way you will have a stable community with no rush to provide larger housing. When you're ready to upgrade you can expand your stock easily and can have a plan already set. I'd suggest you post in the African Cichlid section on stocking suggestions for your current setup. There are blues and orange-blotched ( OB ) Mbuna that will work with labs and give you an opportunity to add more aggressive species once you've upgraded and settled your stock.

Blue2Frye, I totally agree, but there are even degrees of aggressiveness among mbunas.
I'm not familiar with the other fish he has but if they are way aggro, even mbunas could have problems, no?
