My 55 gal BF tank sprang a leak last week, I was able to save all the fish and since it was in the garage it didnt cause damage. I wanted to know if you can suggest the best silicon to use. Also if you can just fix a section. The back bottom is the only place it leaked and everyother place looks good.

GE type II silicone is tank safe. When resealing, you have to do the whole interior of the tank. New silicone won't stick to old. Which also means you have to get all the old silicone off totally. No skimping on the clean up. Good luck with it!

Thought Ge Silicone II had mold inhibitors(bad for mold and aquatic life?) - Silicone type I is made without it. I am new and no disrespect to previous posters, something to research before a noble but arduous reseal.

Oops... sorry. Things were a little hectic when I was typing. I think type I is right. No offense taken, thanks for setting the info straight!

It would be a real waste of time if you sealed a section near the bottom when there are other sections that may be bad. Just strip out the entire inside silicone seals, NOT THE SILICONE SEALS BETWEEN THE PANELS, and place a toothpaste size bead of new silicone in all the corners and use a teaspoon to spread it flat.
