Hey everyone, I am planning on making a empty 10g tank a planted tank. This will be my first time with a planted tank and I decided my empty 10 was perfect to start off with.

I do have a question with the substrate. I am looking for a black subsrate but I have no idea on what to get. Any one have some good recommendations? I'm going stop by some lfs to see what they have, and hopefully can purchase it today so I can get it up and running.

One other question I have is do you have to replace the substrate after sometime? Or do you just have to add ferts and what not after sometime?

Eco complete is black and easy to find. You might as well get a plant substrate, since it isn't any more expensive than other black sand from a fish store.
It doesn't need to be replaced.

If you want to keep it basic, you don't need to add fertilizer or CO2.
Intense light will necessitate ferts and CO2 though

:iagree:

im gonna be the odd one and scream color quartz, although it is hard to find. if you mix it with a little bit of clay and dose with ferts it works amazing well as a fertilizer. I have it in my 55, and in there it is just color quartz. The plants grow huge. After I added root tabs they grew even faster

only thing with color quartz is i think it might be discontinued (think) also it only comes in like 50lb bags. for a 10g i would go with something like fluorite black sand, fluorite black or eco-complete. because while yes it's more expensive per pound you really don't need as much of it.

Thanks everyone for the info. I'm going check out a lfs to see if they have any ecocomplete, what size would I need for a 10g?
