what is fin rot? is there more than one possibility of what it could be?
can I guess that what ever pathogen is always in the water but it only attacks a fish if there is stress to that fish or parts of the fish.
could it come in treated tap water?
and what would I use to treat it, any plant safe options?
good question. From time to time I will have a female guppy get fin rot. These are healthy guppies in healthy tanks. I think it comes from stress. Females are constantly hounded by males.I have never had any other of my fish get it.
In the past I tried to treat it, nothing worked.

fin rot is commonly found in tanks with stressed out, diseased fish...
...although it can occur in tanks that just have overall poor water quality.

I believe that there are two kinds of fin rot as well, bacterial and fungal... though I could be wrong. I've personally had two different "kinds" of fin rot, one that moved very slow and is treatable, and one that moved very quickly and killed the fish in a matter of hours. I have only encountered it in extremely stressed fish and those in poor water quality.
