Hi,
I am trying to find the ideal setup for concentrated, powerful bluelight energy (420nm) to cover an area the size of a person's face. So far, this is what I've found.
I need:
t5ho pure actinic bulbs - ideal spectrum w/ most 420nm concentration
high bay fixture - for a more concentrated light
2 compact units of 4x18" length - about the right size - approx. 1.5ft x 7" x 2"
Is there anything else I don't know that could help me achieve an ideal setup? How can I get this for the cheapest price? Do any lamps of this size sell bundled with pure actinic (420nm) lights?
Thank you for your help. :o

could you settle for 450 nm? blue leds would do it for cheaper depending on driver, you could get away with 2 leds. you could even just do one with a focusing optic
cree royal blue xr-e.
a persons face is like a foot max, depending on where you consider the face, but t5s dont come that short, PCs do but the bulbs are expensive.
power supply - 9 bucks
driver-2$-20$ bucks
leds - 8 bucks a pop
heatsink 0-10 bucks
so 40-50 dollars depending, leds will be much more intense than PCs
since they are point light sources they will create shadows where pcs will not.
i guess, cheap route, PCs, for a little more money but a bunch more research leds.
curious, what are you using this for?

It will be used as an acne treatment. Bluelight at 405-420 nm kills p. acnes, and it's common practice in dermatologist offices these days (albeit for $$$). A home-made unit should be more effective as you can use it every day, and it costs a lot less.
There's a long thread discussing home-made options here:
http://www.acne.org/messageboard/Internet-alternatives-Ex-t172034.html
Anyways, it comes down to 2 options:
1.) T5 HO pure actinic lights
or
2.) http://www.sci-art-global.com/acne/product-comparison.htm# - #3 - a point-source led
The actinics are more diffuse. I am having a very difficult time finding the most efficient actinic setup.
UV is a non-issue with either of these options. Neither produces significant amounts (assuming it is truly a pure actinic light).
And here is the academic paper discussing this treatment: http://www.sci-art-global.com/acne/british-journal.pdf

they advertise a 405nm 1w led but they dont have it in the datasheet.
there is a driver on dealextreme.com that powers 12 to the max drive current of this led for like ten dollars
