For starters, love this website. It is very active, with lots of good info. I have medium level experience at freshwater, and plan to start a marine fish only tank of 15 gallons.
My question, why go with "Live Sand"? Why not use something like Kent EcoStart, Nutrafin Cycle (or the other such liquid bacteria products out there)?
People say the bacteria cannot live in the bottles used for the liquid bacteria, but then how can the bacteria then live in the sand in the bag? For me, the sand in the bag carries too much risk of introducing unwanted members into my tank. And the live rock - forget it, again too much chance to introduce unwanted inhabitants.
I plan to cycle with a good dry marine substrare, dead rock, and Right Now! Bacteria from HDLTD.com.
The cycle may take longer, but that is my plan, and I will be patient with the cycle before adding fish.

The live sand *should* introduce a greater diversity of bacteria. As to how much bacterial diversity is left in such situations is difficult to say. An even better bet would be to use bagged live sands, in addition to "real" live sand that is collected and delivered (It is also usually held in better situations, as opposed to sitting in a bag). This provides not only bacterial diversity, but also a diversity of sand infauna, like various worms, etc. This would provide the greatest diversity
