What type of light?

If florescent what is the k rating?

how long has the moss been in there?

Might just be normal dieoff, my moss went through "booms" and "busts" all the time.

Get some cherry or amano shrimp to groom the java moss. They do a good job of picking off the dead stuff and leaving the healthy stuff.

I disagree with more lighting being needed as my moss grows well in <1wpg. It isn't how much light but the quality of it. One of the nicest thighs about java moss is the low demand for light and minimal nutrients. Keep in mind that quality plays a far greater role than quantity. I also have tanks w/o shrimp and still have no problems. If your lamps are of an unknown age replace
them and see if that helps.
