anybody have an opinion on the skilter 400 with built in skimmer. just bought it for my 70 gallon reef tank and under the heading 'you get what you pay for' at $45 im afraid i may have cheaped out.

i've never used them, but they're sold by reputable dealers (drsfostersmith.com, bigalsonline.com, etc.) so im sure that they might work. tell us how yours does.

i use mine on a 20g. i can assure you that it works, although it is usually only recommended for tanks 20g and under because of limited skimming power. for a tank as large as yours, it is definitely not enough. as a power filter, i've found it far more dependable than the typical reviews, and in concert with some powerheads to provide better currents and such in a tank of your size, it should be servicable in that capacity. however, i think that, since you're investing in a nice-sized tank, you really shouldn't skimp on the skimmer. i'm sure someone will post in this thread with better recommendations, as i'm not qualified to do so.

the two really good H.O.T. protein skimmers right now are the CPR Bak Pak and the AquaC Remora, with the remora being (probably) the better of the two.
