i got a dime-sized tracked nerite last week.. but as the shell gets closer and closer to the opening, the stripes get longer and eventually merge... very unique.. haven't seen anything like it in any of the pics i've found

looking like a normal red tracked nerite, right?

btw.. i named him Godric :D

Wish my tiger (tracked) would do that!

Is your nerite feeding well and appearing healthy? Then I wouldn't be worried, just intrigued. My best guess would be the change in conditions from wherever it lived until you got him/her, to your conditions now.

More than a year ago, I was speaking with a VERY well informed LFS store owner (he really is like a scientist who just happens to run an aquarium shop) out near Springfield, and he was telling me that a researcher was doing a study on nerites, specifically the striped ones, to see if the striping was genetically determined, or altered by environment, including foods available when first hatched. What the researcher HAD determined so far was that the striped shells were like fingerprints - no two identical. Some will look similar (again, like fingerprints), but on a microscopic level (measuring growth rate and the cells which lay down the shell as the snail grows) they were unique. Apparently he was trying to do selective matings to see if he could "place" certain patterns into the offspring.

Enjoy your VERY unusually patterned nerite - its very nice looking!
