From what I have heard from other members, I have heard that Melafix either works a little or not at all...is this true? Because it seems in posts when people mention Melafix everybody tells them not to use it

it depends on what you are treating, I've used it and it's worked. There was one time it didn't work, then I took a step back and realized I was treating for the wrong thing...

I tend to think of Pimafix and Melafix as the equivalent of "over the counter" medications. Probably less effective for serious disease problems, but also fewer potential side-effects. There are some diseases that if caught relatively early, the fish will often recover with minimal intervention. In this case Pimafix or Melafix is appropriate, in other instances, something stronger is warranted (i.e. it won't cure ich). A lot of people use it as a preventive antiseptic in the case of a serious injury as well. There's an argument about whether or not the fish would have recovered on it's own, but my opinion is that just like the flu, most will recover without intervention, but a certain percentage when left untreated will develop a much more serious illness and die. I'd rather err on the side of caution, particularly when the risk of side-effects is pretty much nil.

hm oh, thanks for the info

I use Melafix mostly for nipped fins, and missing scale wounds nothing serious. In general it is like vitamins for optimal health but not very good at treating disease.
