How safe is it to mix female Bettas with other docile fish? I've seen pairs of them mixed with tetras, guppies and the like. Do they have any aggressive tendencies like the males?

Female bettas IME mix fine with other normal tropical community fish. They might get a little feisty within their own ranks until an alpha female has been selected. Even so, females rarely flare. Just make sure all the females are around the same size, so no one gets bullied unfairly.

I know you did not ask this, but just in case...
I would not recommend adding a male and a female in the same tank unless the tank is over 15 gallons and there are ample hiding spaces and objects to break lines of sight. Check out www.bettatalk.com, the largest Betta website out there. The operator of the site, Faith, does not advise mixing males and females for any reason besides for breeding, but I have heard many stories of it being done successfully.

I have two females and one male in my community tank. 56 gallons. For the most part, the male is more distracted by the other fish and his own reflection to bother distrurbing the females. Every so often he flares at the females, but they dont seem to care, lol, its rather amusing to watch him try and show off and they could care less, lol. Kinda like real life........
But yeah, one thing I noticed, my bettas, out of the entire community tank, are almost the most active fish in there, to think they are kept in cups or small containers, ida know

on the other hand, I put a male and a female betta in my 55 gallon and the male would relentlessly chase the female so we removed him. I started having dead guppies and was blaming it on my hyperactive giant danio's until one late night up for a drink of water, I found my female betta had a male guppy cornered in the bottom of the tank pounding his guts out so I immediately yanked her for bowl duty. No more bettas in community tanks for me. Kyle
