I just got a 50 gallon tank with power heads. What is the purpose of these and how do i set them up? I have never had power heads before.
thank you for any input, my fish friends are eagerly awaiting their new paradise!

powerheads are to provide more water movement in your aquarium. depending on what/how many fish you have you may not need to use them. If your aquarium filters are moving alot of water and keeping your tank clean then just put them away and keep for future use.
powerheads are also used on undergravel filters did the aquarium come with undergravel filters?

Did the previous owner use it for a saltwater setup? That may explain why you have them. They can also be attached to sponge filters if it came with any of those (or you ever need to set one up).

PH are not REALLY needed, depending on your filter. They are just for more water circulation.

I use powerheads to increase surface disturbance ans get better gas exchange. I put them just below the surface and point the water at the surface untill i can see the water moving but not so much that it breaks the surface.
