I posted earlier about loosing a cardinal tetra today. I went in right now to turn the light off and I discovered that one of the glowlight tetras had a cardinal tetra in its mouth and was trying to eat it. Is is possible that the glowlight tetras are killing and eating the cardinals?

I'm taking the cardinals out tonight just to be safe, two have been killed weather it be from water conditions or canibalistic fish.

well if im right tetras share a similarity with pirrana (i think ) but i only once have heard a rumor that somone ahd tetras gang up on and kill fish.

or maybe he was already dead and the tetra was just picking at him

alright, thanks. I'm getting them ready for my other tank still. The tank they are from just won't establish itself, I'll keep the numbers down for a while to see if that will help, plus I dont' want to loose any more fish.

the lamplights do chase the cardinals around pretty aggressivly, though. I'm going to try and get rid of them, they aren't pretty, they aren't active, and they are bullies. I'll see if my friend who works at a petstore will take them for me.

I bet it was already dead like dethjam said unless the cardinal is much much smaller than the glowlight. I have had glowlights, cardinals and neons together along with many other types of tetras and have not seen any agression from any of them. Kyle

My glowlights are very peaceful. I haven't ever noticed them chasing any of the other types of tetras I have. Now the serpaes do like to fin nip. And I always thought the glowlights were very pretty, could you have the head and tail light tetras? I noticed one time you called them lamplights. I've never had any head & tail lights.

I agree. The fish had to be dead before hand. Glowlights are peaceful and have very small mouths.

yeah, I do switch names, don't I? I get them confused, I'm not a tetra person, my sister is. The fish in question are about an inch long, mostly silver with a little red around the eyes.

well, they are happy in he 20g for now, I'm doing another water change in the 10 today, maybe they can go back home soon.

Yes, I agree with everyone else here. These guys would not eat a grown Cardinal. But every type of fish will eat another fish. It happens, but not all will go lurking for other fish but will feed on small fry or eat the dead.

You said that the one that ate the cardinal was silver with red eyes? Check the pic I put in here. That's a red eye tetra. These guys are kind of agressive. They might take down a small to med cardinal. Glowlights and H&T lights wouldn't.

Jesse, that's them. My fish store should burn for mislabling them.

the cardinals weren't full grown in the least, they were still babies, brand new additions to the tank. I don't know if it was the stress of being tormented by the red eyes or the ph and gh being too high that killed them, but something did.

I'm calling my friend who works at a fish store today to try and get these redeyes to a new home, so the cardinals can be returned to their own tank.
