I am thinking of getting an oscar but need a little push to get one i would like to ask if anyone could post pics of their oscars and fts and a little about the oscar to help me make up my mind. thanks

Do you have a BIG heavily filtered tank?

55gal is a bit small for an adult Oscar, 75 is more like it. Heavy duty filtering, those things can EAT, and of course poop.

Dont keep them with anything that might even come close to fitting in their mouth.

Other than that, they are great fish. Pretty hardy, as long as you have that space, filtering and water changes to control the mess they make. Dont put them in a small tank and hope to upgrade later, they will grow FAST in good conditions. Mine has grown from 2.5 to 5" on 2 months.

My little Oscar is in a 58gal with my big pleco, but will move to an 85gal in the future. Some folks find them a bit shy when they are young, but mine was jumping for food from my hand after 24 hours.

Here he is with the pleco having a "discussion" over some floating pellets. The pleco floats to the top and tries to suck the pellets from the surface, and bats the oscar away with it's pectoral fins.:argue:

Yeah. 55 really is a tight fit for an adult Oscar.

My oscar is as long as a 55 is wide.... so you get the idea.

Here's his setup. And him. 125g

You need a minimum of 75 gallons or anything with the equivalent foot print 48" X 18" as a MINIMUM. I have 4 and think they are just great. If you have time to pay attention to them and keep the water clean, you couldn't ask for a more active fish. They will interact with their keeper and always beg to be fed even if they just ate 2 minutes ago.

Don't cheap-out on the food as you will have nothing but health issues. They can easily develop bloat not only from para sites but also from foods poor in nutrients to overfeeding among other reasons.

Stay away from live foods unless you have raised it yourself and can attest to it being free of diseases. Using live food from a store is a good way to introduce illness and disease.

They are as close to a dog as you can find in the fish world. As with many other fish, they do recognize their owns and it is common to refuse to eat from anyone other than the owner. They are cantankerous, ornery, moody and stubborn and all at the same time if they wish, LOL.

Plants and decor are fair game to be used as toys or to re-decorate their tank as they see fit. They will often rearrange substrate, plants and decor several times over. If it ain't nailed down, it's gonna get moved.
