I found a picture of a cichlid that was given to me. I want to verify its type so I can get 3 or 4 females (assuming it's a male) to add to that tank.
Please verify if this is a Melanochromis johanni, or something else.
Thanks.

This image is from www.amateurcichlids.com.
Yes, looks like a M. johanni from chisumulu....females and young males are yellow/orange.
:)
It could be a Johannii, but I’m leaning towards a M. cyaneorhabdos Maingano.
Maingano do not have broken lines like that.
Here is a pic:

of course, you could vent it...and if it turns out to be female, then you don't have a regular M. johanni.

I don't agree.

And here's the Johannii.

Edit: But to make it even more complicated; if it turns out to be a female it still could be the ‘Johonnii’ from Chisumulu which is actually called Melanochromis interruptus (or before that, elastodema) As with maingano, the males and females are look-alikes.
After reading this article, I’m not sure anymore which one you have.

maingano do not have broken lines. Well, at least quality ones....

Perhaps you mean adult ones??
But if you say it is M. Johannii, it is.

This issue is well documented and discussed.
The true johanni has no vertical lines and the females are tangarene. There is a blue morph of the male which is the Maingano.
the pic belongs to a different fish that the female is also blue. it is sold as maingano and hence the confusion.
Now if you get a hybrid of the two. Well that's another story! :)

Um, I have a headache now. :argh
And I am still not sure.
Thank you all for your answers , but I still am not sure what this fish is.
So please place your bets on whether it's an M. Johannii or an M. Maingano
My bet:

He has it listed as M. johanni
http://www.amateurcichlids.com./fish/melanochromis_johanni.shtml
Although, if it is a M. johanni, it should not be refered to as "Electric Blue", as that typically refers to M. maingano.
:p
This is M. johanni

Quote taken from: http://www.londonaquariasociety.com/article008.asp
"Melanochromis Johanni “Chisumulu Easterni”
These fish are big brutes, growing easily to 5 inches. My wild caught male is almost 6 inches. The males turn a jet black with a broken-up lateral bar, and blue bands across the forehead. The females are a beautiful butter yellow, growing to 4 inches. These also require a large tank to prevent females from being hounded to death by the males. They are a truly spectacular fish, and if you have the room, definitely choose some!!"
And finally, this site takes the cake and clears up why the pic you have in your first post is NOT a maingano:

Well, here we go again :D
I thought ‘Electric blue’ is referring to Sciaenochromis fryeri. :p
However, my bet? it’s Melanochromis interruptus.

Electric blue is the nick name or the strrt name for the Sciaenochromis fryeri.
The Johhani has a blue color morph cwith strret name of "Electric blue Johhani". It is never reffered to as electric blue. That's all. :)
