I got a 30 gallon tank off Kijiji on thursday night, and I spent a good 5+ hours cleaning it last night. While I was filling it with water to rinse off all the cleaner I used I heard a POP...I knew exactly what had happened so I rushed to set up my siphon and drain all the water out of the tank... :( there is now roughly an 8" crack on the side pane of my "new" tank. I was wondering if it is cheap enough to replace that pane of glass or would it be better for me to just go out and get a new 30 gallon tank?

I'm pretty bummed by this :( Silly mistake on my part cost me a perfectly good tank :wall:

in my opinion and experience on tanks that small silicone the crack and you are good to go

I have a few tanks 60g and under that have had cracks that a simple silicone bead on the crack did the job may not look the nicest but meh holds the water and does not obscure the front

I would call a local glass shop and find out how much to fix it. My guess is it wouldn't be that much, and I'd trust it a whole lot more than a bead of silicone holding all the weight of the water back.

I may have come up with my own solution but I want your opinions...would it work if I were to go to home depot and pick up a piece of lexan and silicone it to the cracked pane of glass? I got 1 quote today for $130 for a 12 7/16" x 15 3/4" x 3/8 piece of glass...

I wouldn't use acrylic, but you could use another pane of glass to do it (which I've seen numerous times). However, there is worry that the crack will spread and potentially degrade the integrity of the whole pane. If that starts to happen, you will either have to replace the entire pane or get a new tank.

Let me just say that I already have nightmares about my tank shattering, and my tank is in perfect condition. If it had a crack in it, it would be replaced immediately.

Do you have nice floors you would rather not replace in the near future?

Ditto.. bare minimum I would call a glass shop and get a piece cut to size, strip down the tank/trim and replace the cracked piece. I would never try and "bandaid" a cracked piece of glass that is holding back water from ending on the floor. Personally, I would just buy a new tank. 30G go for $39.99 all the time at my local Petsmart. $40 is cheap compared to everything else that is going into and onto the tank IMO.

$40 for 30 gallons? Where do you live?

Cali.. but I would think a large chain like Petsmart would have similar prices at all stores. I know Petco used to do a once a year $1 per gallon tank sale as well.

Ahh... oops, didn't realize you were in Canada until now.. my bad.
