Ok so it has come to the point where I feel I need to put my girl out of her misery :(

What is the fastest most effective yet humane way to do it?

I wish I didn't have to do this so if possible it would be a plus if it wasn't to painful on me too..

Clove oil is the most caring way to put a fish down, painless. I always keep some on hand but have not had to use it for 2 years. Sorry to hear your having to do that... :(

I just had to do this to one of my fish like five minutes ago. I know its only a tetra but it still sucks. I don't have clove oil but I have read several times if you take water just barely above freezing and put them straight in it it will kill them humanely. This is what I did it was over in less then a minute :(

(sorry for your loss too :( )This causes ice crystals to form in the blood stream/heart, that has to be very painful. I am not saying your wrong for doing this, I have used that method before as well and that's what got me looking for a different approach if I ever had to repeat the process again. It basically puts the fish to sleep/numbs it then stopping the heart shortly there after. No additional stress. Having tried both I would go the clove oil route over anything else.

>> Small bowl, add clove oil, add fish, feel better for doing the right thing.

Temperature Shock, Freezing

100% humane, and the best way to go when euthanizing tropical fish. The method is simple. Freeze a bowl of water until it has ice chunks in it, but is not solid in any way. Net the fish out of your tank and into the bowl. The difference in water temperature will cause an instant and fatal shock to the internal organs and nervous system of the fish. Sound harsh, but the deed is done painlessly and instantly. Make sure that the water is frozen sufficiently for this to be humane. Being impatient and dropping the fish in very cold, but not half frozen water, will only torture it. Whenever someone asks my opinion on euthanasia, this is the method I suggest. It is the easiest to perform for the average hobbyist, and is instant.

Temperature Shock, Boiling

Again, 100% humane, the same method as above in regards to freezing shock, except you use boiling water. This method is recommended for cold water fish, instead of tropical fish, for obvious reasons. The temperature shock instantly shuts down all organs and the nervous system of the fish, painlessly. We do the same thing to lobsters when they are cooked. As always, use caution when working with boiling liquids. They wonâ??t kill you, but will sure leave some nasty burns. The same disclaimer as above. Make sure the water is at a good boil before employing. Dropping the fish in simply hot water, will not suffice.

It should be noted that clove oil is not instant. Some fish have actually waken up from a deep, deep sleep that clove oil put them in.

Anyone wanna come do this for me? shes my pride and joy breeding angel :( had her and her mate since they were babies. :( this sucks. I might do the ice one seeing I can't get to the shop today. :(

Lowryder, I won't disagree that the temp shock method is effective, the OP asked a question "what is the most humane way" and I answered it based my own personal experience with both methods. The first time I did the temp method was because it was too late to get to the LFS. My advice was that keeping some handy is a good idea for any fishkeeper as it is the most humane way. The temp method is not instant, quick but not instant. Clove oil done right, is a far better alternative.

what if you combined both methods? clove oil first to put the fish out, then the ice to make sure you did it right? I'm dreading this, I don't want to make her live any longer then she has to, but i really dont want to do it
