Whisper air pump-loud as hell

I just got home, I was out for over an hour probably and my Whisper pump got loud as hell. I know the first response is going to be that my airstone is clogged, but it's not. If I kink the air hose or cover the tip with my thumb, it gets quiet again. I just had a power outage but I hooked it up to a generator almost immediately and it wasn't loud, and I do have a check valve. Any help is appreciated, I've heard Whisper's a good brand, and it's only 5-6 months old.

Some air pumps have intake filters that need to be changed out every so often...have you checked yours...?

both the larger whispers I have are really loud. I've found that valving them down a bit, so they're not allowed to run at full tilt, helps quiet them down a bit... but I wish I didn't have to do that. it really doesn't seem like the noise has anything to do with the pump vibrating on the table or anything like that, rather it's like the diaphram is amplified at full blast.
