Would I lose anything if I replaced my XP2 with a AC500 ?

I have a AC300 on another tank and like it's mechanical filtration
effectiveness.

I will buy your XP2 also.

Why do you want to replace it? You can stuff a lot more foam in an Filstar than you can in any HOB filter.

I will give it a couple more months to see how the XP2 is performing.

All I know is that the Eheim Classic trapped a lot more waste...but
the Eheim is not as easy to perform maintenance as the XP2.

The 4 XP2 foams were not very dirty when I went to rinse them.

I don't know your filter but eheim difficult to clean? Mine is so easy and the best part is it only requires a cleaning twice a year, I don't think it can get to much easier than that!

Do you see the dirt in the water in the tank? If not, then I wouldn't use the amount of dirt in the foam as a measure of effectiveness. In mine I have a lot of crap that just sits in the bottom of the canister when I get to cleaning. The Eheim probably caught that in the foam since its laid out differently. If thats the case, the Rena seems more effective in my book since the foam can't clog as fast.

Also, the foam in an Aquaclear seems coarser to me and I don't get the best particulate filtration from mine vs my Rena's.

I will admit that it seems like the Eheim media is a little better than Renas. Try whatever you used in your Eheim in your filstar and see how that does.
