hey all,

I would love to get some plants in my 90 G tank. My past experience is not too good, my fish have eaten, riped up or just schreaded my plants in a couple of weeks. I have a eheim canister and I drop in a large submersible filter with foam and mostly carbon, bubbler. My fish are, 3 large black convicts, 3 large parrot, 1 tiger barb, 2 bala sharks, 1 pleco, 1 blue gourami, 1 rope fish and 1 large ( 6 to 7 inches ) unknown ( I think cold water fish)

I have a single 48" florencent full spectrum bulb, I am willing to add more light if needed, tank is located in an area that does not get direct lighting during the day.

What can u recommend?

I don't know for sure, but from what I've read on other posts, there aren't many types of plants that your fish will NOT destroy. The Covicts and parrots especially. Don't take my word for it, wait for someone who knows better, but it will be a difficult task.....

Judging from what happens in my friend's tank of convicts, there are no plants that survive. If you do try plants add some veggies to the tank as well. The fish may eat lettuce and spinach before eating the plants.

Thats bad news, I was hoping there was a tougher type of plant. I saw somewhere a tall broad leaf grass that looked really durable and cool, anyone know what type of plant that might be?

Got any pics of it?

Probably mondo grass, and not a true aquatic. It wouldn't survive underwater. Any tough-looking plant you see will probably not be true aquatic, and not a good idea to put in your tank. Most aquatic plants are quite delicate.

You can try Java fern though. Very few fish eat it, and it's not demanding.

Duke I believe the plant you saw is called vallisneria, or vals. Check out tropica.com and see if that is the same plant.

I think vals might be ok, they are tough plants that is for sure. I've never kept convicts so I don't know about them eating plants. Like mentioned java fern and java moss might also work. Anubias are pretty tough too.
